One Secret to Getting a Standing Ovation

I’ve been coaching public speaking for twenty years.

In this time, coaching everyone from entrepreneurs to CEOs to national high school speech champions… and with graduate degrees in both communications and theater, I’ve learned a thing or two about speaking.

One Secret to Getting a Standing Ovation Social Buzz ClubMostly that… it’s not as hard as you think it is.

That’s not to convey that it’s easy. In fact, the biggest mistake that anyone makes around public speaking is the belief that they naturally should be good at it, because they know how to speak in everyday life. In fact, public speaking is both an art and a science. This means that it’s a learnable skill – just like any other.

The bad news? There’s a lot to learn. And it takes time. Even more, you have to actually integrate this learning into your skill set; it’s not just a matter of knowing what to do.

The good news? Anyone can learn to be a powerhouse speaker.

Build a Strong Online Presence with Wikipedia

I’m old enough to remember using the Britannica Encyclopedia, considered the defacto reference, when doing my school research work.  My how times have changed.  In today’s information age online journalists and high level influencers turn to the Internet to gather information on individuals and companies.  Where libraries, dictionaries, and encyclopedias once dominated the top spot for research, Wikipedia has quickly become a main source. But unlike these old-fashioned methods this is a place of community driven content.

How does Wikipedia Build your Online Presence?

  1. Having a Wikipedia Page will give you Page One exposure in the search engines.
  2. It establishes you as the expert for journalists with what I think of as the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.
  3. It will increase your Klout score.

Did you know that anyone can edit a Wikipedia article?  Before you get too excited about how great that is, it’s actually what makes having a Wikipedia page difficult.

It’s very important to understand how Wikipedia works and what is required in order to have a successful page that sticks there. You must have what is called ‘noteworthiness’.  Writing some articles or publishing a book isn’t enough.  What awards have you won?  What big media has written about you?

It’s different based on your professions.  For authors, there is a general guideline that has been established by Wikipedia and can be found here under “creative professionals” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AUTHOR#Creative_professionals). While the guideline seems very specific, the majority of authors can have Wikipedia pages created if they have had significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of them. For instance, if there is an article about them that has appeared in the New York Times or a well-known magazine, that could qualify them.

For books, the same would apply. The books would need to receive significant coverage. Generally, book reviews in well-known publications would qualify.

No Growth Focus Leads To Business Decline

bike-circleYou may have heard the saying “Do what you’ve always done and you will get what you have always had”.

I don’t believe this is true any longer.

With the accelerated change of almost everything we know in our world it is insane to think that we can continue to do the same thing over and over and continue to get the same outcome. Changes in technology, ideology, the economy, sociology, borders, acceptable behavior, knowledge level, climate, global interaction, community, etc. affect your business.

A business that operates like it did 10 years ago is missing some key connections and opportunities which will eventually cause the business to fail.

For example, there is a wonderful Toronto clothing designer that makes incredible women’s professional clothing line. For years they have been able to sell just by inviting people to a home to see the line. I would tell my friend she had a new line and they would book time to come. Now, we cherish our personal time so dearly that we don’t do things without first knowing if it will be worth our while. Because this designer does not have a website, does not post any of their past or current designs, does not have any online presence (at all – they don’t exist online), no one is willing to make time, even those people that have been before and know the quality.  Continue reading

Tribe Marketing: How To Build A Tribe Online

Thrive with Your Tribe

Thrive with Your TribeSocial media is a noisy place and if you have a message, a cause, a passion, or a craving to make a difference, then build a tribe. A tribe is a group of people with similar interests and passions. However, tribe building is NOT about converting people to your way of thinking. Rather it’s gathering those who already have the need or challenge you address. In business, your tribe will be the people who see you as the “go to” expert or force for positive change.

Also, a tribe does not mean you are looking for everyone to join it. Rather, it means you bring together people who want to connect, and are waiting for you to step up and lead them. Real change comes from 1,000 people who adore you and then naturally grow you. If you are  truly committed to the change you want to see, then your tribe will help make this change.

The change that the co-founders of Social Buzz Club are passionate about is using the power of collaboration to help amazing businesses get the greatest possible visibility, traffic and success.  Social media makes it possible to build tribes with people thousands of miles away in lands that you have never been to as well as your neighbor you may never have met.

Do you have a passion to enhance the quality of life for a certain group of people? If so who are they? And what do you want them to have that they would value?

How To Build A Tribe of Raving Fans

Seth Godin, Author of “Tribes, We Need You To Lead Us” inspired this post and points to tribe building as the new form of marketing that has leveled the playing field. Social media is the playing field where you can lay the groundwork and grow your network. Make sure you have selected the thing you are great at. Being the best in your unique arena is important to building the confidence and support of your tribe.

Here’s the best news about building a tribe… it is a collaborative effort. You’ve heard Hilary Clinton say, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Well your tribe mission is your child.  You must be focused on the impact you want to have. Once you are crystal clear on the core reason for building your tribe, then you must clearly craft and articulate your message.

For example, whether you’re a CEO or wellness service provider, you company mission and vision is your message. Are you wanting to help people create healthy habits so they can more fully enjoy their lives? Or are you bringing financial integrity to people’s lives? Do you enhance lifestyle? Do you want to end hunger, poverty, and abuse? You must have a cause noble or fun. No judgement here. Ideally, that cause makes a positive difference.

Next, you need to share your message. Standing out on social media can be challenging. It will take time and reaching out to others with similar interests.

For example the message we have at Social Buzz Club is to collaborate and massively spread the word for each other and thereby magnifying the messages of our dedicated influencers, raising their status to their niches and empowering you to reach the widest audience possible via the social networks.

Be Generous – Promote Others and They Will Promote You

You may choose to amplify your message by getting other influencers to share your message for you. There are a few ways that may seem authentic and are effective. That’s where a content sharing network with collaboration incentives can really help.  I recommend checking out the Social Buzz Club that we created. We designed it to be a reciprocal system that’s fun. With the gamification aspect members enjoy being rewarded for sharing others’ content. As a result, you’ll love being a part of the tribe. You will get lots of buzz, traffic and ultimately more leads for building your very own tribe Every month on Social Buzz U we offer the Influencer Webinar Series for our members and others want to learn more about how to build a tribe online.
