Which one should I choose: WordPress.org or WordPress.com?

wordpress-logo-stacked-rgbI have been running my Website Creation Workshop program for 7 years now,
but every single time I run an introductory webinar or teleseminar, this question comes up:

What’s the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org?

I see how people get confused. Both services were created by the same company called Automattic and offer tools to create websites using the “WordPress” platform.

Their basic functions look the same. However, there are some critical differences that you
should know so that you can make the right choice for you when building a website.

WordPress.com (https://wordpress.com/)
  • Software is free, and it also comes with hosting. (ie. You don’t need to get your own hosting. They will host your website for you.) Note: it does NOT include emails, so you need to get a separate email service.
  • You will get your website URL with “wordpress.com” at the end. (ex. yoursitename/wordpress.com) (They offer a premium plan that allows you to use your own domain name while being hosted on WordPress.com server at extra cost.)
  • From time to time, your site might display ads to logged-out users who aren’t regular visitors  unless you purchase a special feature to turn it off.
  • While it offers many free and paid themes, they cannot be customized to the extent you can with wordpress.org themes.
  • They do not allow you to add plugins, which means the functionalities are limited compared to wordpress.org.
  • To sell products/programs from your site, you need to sign up for “WordPress.com Business” (http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/) and pay the fee.
  • They allow you to embed certain forms, not all. For example, you can’t embed the opt-in form for many of the popular email services.

How to Add Your Picture in Google’s Search Results

Have you been searching in Google and come across search results that have pictures of faces in them?

Like this (search phrase: Does social media marketing grow business):

And this: (search phrase: LinkedIn marketing an hour a day)

That’s just Google making sure that your content is YOUR content. The official reason is “to help users discover great content,” says Google.

With more and more people creating content, curating content, and yes, even, copying other people’s content, you’ve got to make sure you’ve added your authorship rank code to your content so Google knows it’s yours. The authorship rank code is like your fingerprint. When you tie your Google+ profile to your website and/or blog, you’re basically adding today’s equivalent of your unique fingerprint.

Here’s how you can get your picture in Google’s search results:

Here’s how you can get your picture in Google’s search results:

Google has made it extremely simple for you to show your picture in your search results.

First, you have to have a Google+ profile. Yes, it’s Google’s sandbox so we have to play by their rules.

Go here to set up your Google+ profile if you have not done so already.

You can go to this link: http://bit.ly/18HefA0 and simply add your email address but be sure the email address is your domain.

Example: name@myname.com

Go to this link to do this now: http://bit.ly/18HefA0

This next step involves adding code into your website’s homepage:

Here’s how: follow the steps in this screenshot below, taken from Google’s section on how to link to your Google+ profile using rel-“author”.

Google wants to make this simple for you so there is a warning that tells you “The easiest and most reliable way to enable authorship information in Google search results is to provide a verified email address on the same domain as your content. If you don’t have an email address on the same domain, however, you can associate your content with your Google+ profile by following the steps on this page.” And below that are the instruction for the rel=”author” two-step process:

– From Google’s Help Section

Google wants to establish authorities on subjects and is using the number of circles you’re in plus how interactive you are in posting in Google+ when deciding who to make visible in the top search results for keywords. So now is an opportune time for you, the subject matter expert of YOUR subject, to strategically position yourself early on while the majority of people lag behind.

The most important steps to take after you’ve established your authorship is to optimize your Google+ profile; start consistently engaging and sharing relevant posts; and get in as many relevant circles as you can. How do you do all this? I wrote a blog post about Google+ when I was part of the BETA group the summer before Google rolled it out publicly. The advice I shared back then still stands. Read my Google+ blog post.

If you create content, you simply have to add your fingerprint to it (in the form of your authorship rank) or risk being invisible, un-findable, and un-authoritative about your subject matter.

  3. Make sure you follow all of them
  4. Send a dm “Happy to follow back!” to at least a couple of them, to let them know, you you started following, otherwise, they miss this
  5. Go over “unreplied statuses”, see if you can quickly cultivate relationship. Examples: “Thanx for the retweet”, “Happy to engage :) “..

Outcome: you have (0) in all lists counts – this is your indication you took care of your “High-value members” – the people that drive your community

Step 2: Balance your followers/following ratio – improve your “influence perception”

Unfollow all people in “Consider to Unfollow” list.

If you see you had 0 engagements – unfollow right away If you had few engagements –  either engage him (which will remove him from the list), or “hide” him (which will also remove him from list, without unfollowing him)

Outcome: Consider to Unfollow list has (0) items. Now you are ready to follow more people

Step 3: Follow the Right People

Follow 5-10 people in your Consider to Follow list

Step 4: Thank your top new followers

  1. Go to “New Followers” list
  2. Sort them by “Highest Rating”
  3. Follow the top 3-5
  4. “Say Hi” to top new followers

Outcome: you have (0) in New Followers list

Step 5: Connect with likeminded people and potential clients

  1. Go to “Discover New Leads” section and make sure you monitor at least 1 keyword relevant for your industry (for Commun.it it’s “community management”)
  2. Click on a list
  3. Sort it by “Highest Rating”
  4. Follow the top 3-5
  5. “Say Hi” to your top leads

Step 6: Show your passion for your community (optional)

Go to Advanced -> Activity Report -> Share with your Community

Outcome: Everybody you followed / engaged with recently will see this, and it will position you as a professional that wants to build relationships

Pinterest for Business Exposure

How To Use Pinterest for BusinessSocial media influencer, Kim Garst, gave a fabulous training for our Social Buzz U chock full of Pinterest tips for business. Here are some of the highlights she shared:

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a social network that allows you to organize and share almost anything you find on the web. Since it is imaged based sharing, you create virtual bulletin boards (or pin boards) by topic. Then you pin images from pages online that contain information related to your bulletin board topics. Topics or themes can include everything to personal interest areas like weddings, decorating ideas, exercise, fitness tips, recipes, to business interests.

Tip: Browse others pin boards created by others to find pins for your boards.  Continue reading
